74LS151 8-to-1 multiplexer

The 74LS151 is an 8-to-1 multiplexer. The select inputs C B A choose one of the eight data inputs D0 to D7 and pass it to the output Y, with its complement on W. The active-low strobe G′ must be low; with G′ high, Y is low and W is high.

What the 74LS151 is used for

  • Selecting one of eight signals
  • Implementing any function of four variables in one package: three variables go to the selects and each data input is tied to 0, 1, the fourth variable or its complement
  • Parallel to serial conversion

Any function of four variables in one package: C B A select, and each data input is tied to 0, 1, D or D′.

Typical figures for quick reference when planning a board. Check the manufacturer's datasheet for limits and timing before committing a design. The 74HC151 and 74HCT151 use the same pin numbers, with different electrical values.

Try the 74LS151 on a breadboard

The Breadboard Simulator has the 74LS151 in its parts library: seat it on a virtual breadboard, wire it, power the board and probe the pins before you build the real thing.
