74LS193 Synchronous up/down 4-bit binary counter
The 74LS193 is the binary version of the 74LS192: it counts 0 to 15, up on a rising edge of UP and down on a rising edge of DOWN, with the same pinout, parallel load and active-high clear.

74LS193 function table
| CLR | LOAD′ | UP | DOWN | What happens |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | X | X | X | Clear to 0 |
| 0 | 0 | X | X | Load A–D |
| 0 | 1 | ↑ | 1 | Count up |
| 0 | 1 | 1 | ↑ | Count down |
| 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | Hold |
CO′ pulses low as the count passes 15 going up; BO′ pulses low as it passes 0 going down.
What the 74LS193 is used for
- Up/down binary counters
- Position counters fed by a rotary encoder
- Counters of any length, chained through CO′ and BO′
Electrical summary

| Input current, low | 0.4 mA out of each input held low |
| Fan-out | one output can drive about 20 LS inputs |
Typical figures for quick reference when planning a board. Check the manufacturer's datasheet for limits and timing before committing a design. The 74HC193 and 74HCT193 use the same pin numbers, with different electrical values.
The 74LS193 and the Breadboard Simulator
The 74LS193 is not in the Breadboard Simulator's parts library yet — this page is a reference. The simulator seats the gates, decoders, multiplexers, adders and buffers marked on the chips page, so the logic around a 74LS193 can be planned and wired there.
