74LS283 4-bit binary full adder

The 74LS283 is a 4-bit binary full adder with fast carry. It adds the two 4-bit numbers A4–A1 and B4–B1 together with the carry-in C0, and gives the 4-bit sum S4–S1 and the carry-out C4. In arithmetic terms, C4 S4 S3 S2 S1 = A + B + C0.

What the 74LS283 is used for

  • Adding two 4-bit numbers
  • 8-bit and wider adders, by connecting C4 of one chip to C0 of the next
  • Subtraction, by inverting B with XOR gates and setting C0 to 1
  • BCD adders and code converters

Try the 74LS283 on a breadboard

The Breadboard Simulator has the 74LS283 in its parts library: seat it on a virtual breadboard, wire it, power the board and probe the pins before you build the real thing.
