7407 Hex buffer, open collector, 40 mA

The 7407 holds six non-inverting buffers with open-collector outputs that can sink 40 mA and stand off up to 30 V. Like the 7406, each output only pulls low and needs a pull-up resistor or a load to the supply.

A 1 here means the output is off: it is pulled high only by an external pull-up resistor or load.

What the 7407 is used for

  • Driving LEDs and relays without inverting the signal
  • Level shifting from 5 V logic to a higher voltage
  • Wired-AND buses

Standard TTL. A non-inverting open-collector driver: pull-up or LED to +5 V, the output only ever pulls low.

Try the 7407 on a breadboard

The Breadboard Simulator has the 7407 in its parts library: seat it on a virtual breadboard, wire it, power the board and probe the pins before you build the real thing.
